Description

Responsible for obtaining and promoting clinical documentation that accurately represents severity of illness through extensive review of the medical record and interaction with physicians, nursing staff and other patient caregivers. 



Requirements

    • Education and/or experience: Requires one or more of the following certifications – RHIT RHIA, CCS through AHIMA or CPC, CIC through AAPC with a  minimum of  three (3) years of acute care inpatient coding including adult inpatient medical-surgical and critical care with thorough understanding of disease processes. Experience with electronic medical records such as Hyland’s One Content, 3M coding products, Allscripts Paragon, and Nuance CDE or similar systems. Previous experience as a Clinical Documentation Specialist with certification through ACDIS or AHIMA is preferred. Must pass pre-employment Clinical Documentation Specialist Proficiency Test. 

      Knowledge: Requires in-depth understanding of medical record information as well as medical terminology and anatomy and physiology. Must demonstrate knowledge of DRG payor issues and clinical documentation requirements and compliance rules. Must be able to understand and communicate differences between Medicare Part A and Part B guidelines and how they impact DRG assignments upon completion of CDI training. Understands HIM’s standards of coding and applies them to evaluation of medical record documentation. ICD-10-CM/PCS, HCPCS, Charge-Master, Medical Necessity and Billing processes as related to CDI and Coding. 

      Skills: Requires excellent observation skills; analytical and critical thinking; and problem solving skills. Must have well developed verbal and written communication skills, including those required for effective and appropriate communication with physicians. High-level customer service skills required for interpersonal and interdepartmental relationships.

      Abilities: Must be dependable, organized, self-directing, able to manage multiple priorities, and responsible to follow-through with assigned projects, service, and support. Must be able to assess, evaluate, and teach. Must be able to understand and support the CDI program (upon completion of training). Must be able to research and analyze data, draw conclusions, and resolve issues; read, interpret, and apply policies, procedures, laws, and regulations; read and interpret medical procedures and terminology.
